Yirrkala, Northern Territory, Australia – Community-Led Agricultural Revival
The Challenge

A major mining company with operations in Australia’s Northern Territory was seeking ways to reduce food insecurity and create non-mining jobs amid an impending mine closure. For years, Yirrkala, a remote Indigenous community had relied on one of the longest and most expensive supply routes in the world for fresh produce. With the mine closing, this route was about to reduce volumes, putting their already precarious food security situation at greater risk. Given limited access to affordable, nutritious food and few post-mining economic opportunities, the community faced growing pressure to build a more self-sufficient future.

Our Impact

Palladium supported the revitalization of a dormant banana farm into a thriving agricultural hub led by Yolngu community members. By trialing crops like watermelon, corn, and cassava, the initiative is improving food security, reducing costs, and laying the foundation for a resilient, locally driven economy beyond the life of the mine.

Pasco, Peru—Multi-stakeholder Platform for Non-Mining Livelihood Development
The Challenge

A mining company with operations in Peru was struggling with community conflict despite significant investment. With mine closure approaching they needed a strategy to attract regional investment, reduce community dependency on the mine and enable a sustainable exit.

Our Impact

Palladium facilitated the creation of the Platform for Regional Development, bringing together the mining company, the Regional Government, Regional University, a national microfinance institution, and several private companies. The platform has supported the local university to set up a business innovation incubator (two challenges facilitated), connected rural pork producers to commercial supply chains (63% increase in productivity and 31 small businesses supported with low interest loans) and mobilised funding from multilateral institutions as well as the regional government to support non-mining livelihoods ($4.5M).

Brazil—Restoring Forests through Impact Investment
The Challenge

A global mining company committed to restore 100,000 hectares of degraded land and protect an additional 400,000 hectares of forest, while providing communities with improved livelihoods that encouraged enhanced stewardship of natural resources. The company began paying third parties for reforestation services but soon realised that this approach would take too long and require enormous investment. Consequently, they began searching for a more cost-effective method to achieve its goals.

Our Impact

Palladium designed and operated an impact investing model known as the Project Development Facility that links the client to forest positive start-ups. The client acts as a seed-funder for the most promising business models, while Palladium connected these start-ups to additional sources of finance. Over the program’s five year life, Palladium supported 10 businesses, recovered over 18,000 hectares of land and unlocked $60M in additional investments with the balance of the commitment to be delivered by 2030.
